the final !
There are a few things that I think about when I look at what I learned about media literacy.  One thing that I like is the way I look at public advertisements now.  Because of the blog that we would post weekly I trained myself to keep a lookout for interesting advertisements.  While doing so I realized that when I would look at an advertisement I would look at what I liked or didn’t...

Aim.com
http://dashboard.aim.com/  I put a link for AIM.com because it is a website that opens up automatically when signing on to Aol Instant Messenger.  I think this site is interesting because so many people see it each day when they sign online and it has a lot of different features.  The first thing on the page is a changing picture of 5 different top news stories that you can click on.  There is...

Gucci
I chose some of the Gucci advertisements to show a particular kind of lifestyle.  It seems as if the advertisements try to use strange bodily positioning, as if they are some sort of elite that don’t act like the rest of us.

Glamour
Glamour is an interesting idea.  The book describes glamour in a way that is is present when there is also envy present.  I agree with this idea even though I have never thought about it before.  When I think of glamour I think of celebrities, and people are always envying something about celebrities so it makes sense.  In the movie, Bagley figures out that he cannot sell the product best unless...

And then a hero comes along
While watching TV the other day I came across the movie “Spiderman”.  Obviously Spiderman is seen as a hero in the movie and it is easy to see why.  In the movie, Spiderman is this mysterious figure who seems to be able to keep the whole city happy.  He does this by stopping crime from all different parts, making everyone feel a lot safer.  People know they can count on him to be there when they...

The wonders of bamboo
I came across this “Bamboo Pen” online before Christmas, so I thought it would be interesting to ask for as a gift.  Since then, after getting this pen as a gift I have been a little obsessed with it.  It took some getting used to when I first started using it, but basically its like writing on paper but it shows up on the computer.  I thought this was really fun to...

The Century of Self
As I mentioned in my previous post, I found the whole idea of psychoanalysis very interesting. Making people believe that they need something when they really don’t is exatly what I am interested in with the field I am in of advertising. The idea of making it seem like women need cigarettes for “power” reminded me of something else in advertising today. It made me think...

Part 1 of The Century of the Self
I thought the first part of the documentary was very interesting.  Although I have heard of the term “psychoanalysis”, I had never really seen the breakdown of how it can work.  I thought the idea of making cigarettes into “torches of freedom” was an amazing marketing idea, especially when the rich debutante women are the ones who are smoking them.  Not only does the term make the cigarettes...

I came across this advertisement online and I thought it was really interesting.  It’s basically making fun of the fact that the character was used to sell cigarettes, and I think it is done effectively.  You don’t even need to read the box in the corner to understand the point that the picture is making.

Fake magazine covers
In class we were recently talking about a photo that was changed in Photoshop to make it appear “more drasatic”.  I thought this concept was very interesting, and while browsing some websites I came across an article about “doctored covers” of the cover of various magazines.  In this photo of Andy Roddick, photoshop was used to make his arms look a lot bigger than they...

When you really have nothing to do...nothing.
http://www.addictinggames.com/ So I was bored the other day and I got tired of IMing my friends, so I asked them something cool I could do online.  I have always played random computer games but my friend recently introduced me to addictinggames.com.  I don’t know if I like him or hate him more for telling me about this, but at least it gave me something to do for way longer than I’ll...

A little nudity never hurt anyone
In one of my other classes we were recently talking about the taboo on nudity or over-sexed items in American advertising.  If something is too racy or sexual it is constantly ridiculed or even banned.  For instance, the commercial during the superbowl that showed two men kissing over s Snickers bar was too sexually different than what American people are used to, so it was banned.     Spinning...

DVDs: One reason I love technology
Everyone I know has been telling me to watch the TV series LOST for years and I have been very slow in doing so.  However, I started watching it about a month ago and I’m addicted to it.  On a good day I’ll fit in about 4 or 5 episodes.  I’m already on season three which is good since season four starts soon I think.  But I would definitely recommend this series to someone else because...
