There are a few things that I think about when I look at what I learned about media literacy. One thing that I like is the way I look at public advertisements now. Because of the blog that we would post weekly I trained myself to keep a lookout for interesting advertisements. While doing so I realized that when I would look at an advertisement I would look at what I liked or didn’t like, and I would look at if it was memorable enough for me to mention it in my blog. I definitely look at advertisements with a new appreciation and I think that is a bonus because advertisements are seen everywhere.
Another part of my newfound media literacy is the way in which I look at films now. The film that we watched about advertising was definitely a film that I would not have chosen to watch on my own because it was so different. As I watched it I realized how much I began to like it more and more, maybe because it was so strange and out of the ordinary. I think a part of being media literate is being able to look at things that are out of the ordinary and being able to give them a chance. There are so many parts of art and entertainment that are complete different styles from what most of us are used to, and in order to really see what is out there I think it is important to give these things the benefit of the doubt and really see what they are all about.
I think one of the most important parts of my newfound media literacy is the fact that I see how many different programs, chat rooms, blog spots, and other various types of media there are out there. Obviously I knew about things such as “youtube.com” and Facebook, but the more we looked at websites in class the more I realized how much I was missing out on. I’m sure that I could find a blog for any interest of mine, and I know that there are so many different tools out there in order to help me do just about anything. Although I did not enjoy working with Flash, it was still interesting to get to try something like that because I would have never known it even existed. I think it is important to constantly look at the new things that come out because that is the only way to keep updated and on top of things.
I definitely think that all of these new parts of being literate in media are important, especially in the area of communications where it is vital to know about all different applications and programs.
